103 Drilling - Gulf of Mexico
The AutoTrak® System – Deepwater Gulf of Mexico
Operator:
Chevron
Formation: Salt
Drilling System: AutoTrak RCLS
Bit: TX445HA AutoTrak
Well Objective
The operator wished to reduce time & cost by optimizing
overall drilling performance through salt in the 12 ¼” hole section.
This would require steering the salt’s complex 3-D profile with a PDC bit.
The operator also wished to minimize hole problems related to salt flow.
Operation
The AutoTrak Rotary Closed-Loop System (RCLS) reduced the
anticipated drill time from 11 days to 4.25 days. The section was
drilled in a single run as com-pared to the offsets (2 and 4 runs).
The net ROP was 2.6 times greater in the salt than the best offset.
In addition, AutoTrak RCLS achieved all the operator’s directional
objectives — landing the well 1 foot from the target’s center. The use
of INTEQ’s AutoTrak RCLS on this well saved Chevron an estimated
$981,000 in rig time and drilling costs.
