Competence Management Program at Baker Hughes

Be assured of Baker Hughes employee competence

The Baker Hughes Competence Management Program works to qualify the skills and knowledge of personnel in critical roles to comply with industry and government regulations, and improve workplace reliability.

Goals of the Program

The objectives of the Baker Hughes Competence Management Program are simple:

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Contractual compliance
  • Improved workplace reliability
  • Enhanced career development

Competence Assurance as a Priority

Competence assurance is one of the highest priorities of Baker Hughes. The Baker Hughes’ Competence Management Program gives company employees the training and tools necessary to reliably meet and exceed current and upcoming client requirements and government regulations. It also links learning and qualifications of employees to career development and offers a way to measure the experience Baker Hughes employees bring to each project by recording each employee’s achieved skills and training.

IADC Competence Assurance Accreditation

In January 2012, Baker Hughes became the first integrated oilfield service company in history to receive full accreditation of its Competence Management Program from the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

IADC’s system for accrediting competence assurance programs reviews and confirms that the company’s program meets accepted practices to develop and evaluate its personnel across a wide array of the company’s job functions and product lines. Before IADC awarded the accreditation, the organization reviewed performance criteria for employees, the process for defining competencies, training resources and support, documentation, and quality assurance. The accreditation tells customers that Baker Hughes has a formal system to verify that Baker Hughes employees are proficient to work at client sites and on their projects.

Baker Hughes Qualification: The Basis of Competency Assurance

Baker Hughes has a long legacy as a leader in competence assurance programs, and the newly IADC accredited Competence Management Program brings together the best elements of each. Best practices were borrowed from OASIS Certification, Drilling Systems InFacts, CAP programs, and Baker Hughes North Sea competency systems. Where possible, we also used methodology common to other energy companies and even other industries, including the transportation industry.

Currently, the Competence Management Program focuses on critical roles that directly affect performance and reliability at the job site. This includes field personnel; staff who design downhole equipment such as applications engineers, well planners, and fluids lab personnel; anyone who assembles, maintains, and overhauls equipment used at a jobsite; and HSE&S and Quality Control personnel.
