Case Histories
Global Experience in Deepwater Exploration, Development and Production
Baker Hughes has global experience in deepwater operations. Our experts have contributed technology and service to help operators succeed in all major deepwater basins. These case histories are only a few examples of how we have helped our customers unlock the value of their deepwater reservoirs.

Baker Hughes Leading Technologies are Critical to Success of Deepwater Project
- Dynamic Kill Drilling – an innovative riserless
drilling technique – was used to batch drill and set
20" casing in 15 wells from the subsea template. A
record 193,110 barres of DKD fluid were deployed from
our Port Fourchon facility.
- RHEO-LOGIC constant-rheology drilling fluid was
used to reduce fluid losses by 91% compared to
previous wells.
- LWD density and gamma ray borehole imaging and
while-drilling pressure measurements enabled hazard
mitigation, precise well placement, and accurate
formation evaluation.
- The AutoTrak rotary steerable system and CoPilot
drilling optimization service were used in 14.5" X
16.5" hole sections, to perform reaming while drilling
and directional work in laminated sand/shale
formations. This hole section was drilled in one run
on five consecutive wells.
- Genesis PDC bits, designed specifically for this
project, reduced vibration while drilling interbedded
sequences with expandable reamers.
- Baker Hughes completion tools include Neptune
Safety Valves, the CK Frac system for sand control,
and Intelligent Well Systems to adjust flow without
intervention.

PDC Bits and Integrated Drilling/LWD Systems Access Deepwater Reservoirs
Baker Hughes is providing ongoing directional drilling, LWD
and Reservoir Navigation services for deepwater horizontal
wells, including pre-salt plays. PDC bits, integrated bottomhole
assemblies – with rotary steerable systems, logging
measurements, imaging, formation pressure testing and drilling
dynamics sensors – are drilling complext well profiles and long
horizontal sections. Reservoir Navigation services use real-time
measurements to guide the well path, keeping it in the most
productive part of the reservoir. On a recent well, the
horizontal section was adjusted eight times to stay in the pay
and extend the later 67% farther than the original plan. Another
geosteered well was drilled in two runs (compared to five
planned) and placed more than 2700 ft of hole in the productive zone.

Innovative ESP Systems Boost Subsea Production
Baker Hughes has been an innovative supplier of Electric
Submersible Pumping system technology for subsea applications in
Brazil’s deepwater fields. We have provided subsea booster
systems, variable speed drive technology, and the first subsea
ESP system used to produce heavy oil.
Angola
Angola: Kizomba Project
Permanent Monitoring Installed in 100 Deepwater Wells
Since 2003, Baker Hughes has installed permanent monitoring
technology in 100 wells in the Kizomba project, including 158
Dual Star gauges rated to 10,000 psi and more than 500 miles of
control lines.

Drilling and Evaluation Services Reduce Costs and Improve Efficiency
After comprehensive pre-well planning, Baker Hughes provided
drill bits, directional drilling, drilling motors, rotary
drilling systems, surface logging and LWD imaging, acoustic and
pressure testing services. This technology package improved
wellsite safety, drilling efficiency and target accuracy on
complex 3D wells, while drilling nearly 500,000 ft of hole.

Four Wells Drilled and Evaluated 23 Days Ahead of Plan
Baker Hughes helped an Australian operator mobilize to West
Africa to drill a four-well exploration/appraisal program in a
frontier area. Services included project management, drill bits,
wireline logging, directional drilling, LWD, coring, drilling
fluids, packers and well screens. Equipment and personnel were
mobilized from Europe, Angola and the USA. The project was
completed successfully in 102 days, 23 days early and 22% below
AFE.

Interventionless Packer Setting Saves $35 million
The Baker Hughes SB/3H Interventionless packer setting
mechanism saved $35 million for the operator by reducing
operational risk and saving rig time. The remotely set
mechanism, rated at 10,000 psi and 350°F, saved an estimated $1
million per well on 35 wells in the field.

High Performance WBM Protects Hole Through Typhoon Delay
PERFORMAX HPWBM was applied to drill 12-1/4" and 8-1/2"
sections of an exploratory well. The system achieved excellent
wellbore stability without bit balling or drill string
accretion. When a typhoon approached, the hole was left open for
21 days during the evacuation. Drilling resumed without problems
and all drilling, coring, logging and casing objectives were
met.

High Performance WBM Meets Environmental and Performance Objectives
PERFORMAX HPWBM was used to drill 12-1/4" and 8-1/2" sections
in an exploratory well as an environmental alternative to SBM.
The 12-1/4" section was drilled with a PDC bit in one run. ROP
exceeded expectations with excellent wellbore stability.
