Expertise & Experience

Technology, expertise and experience to meet the deepwater challenge

Deepwater fields offer the promise of the world’s most prolific reservoirs with huge potential to produce oil and gas. Deepwater exploration and production also present the industry’s most demanding technical and operational challenges.

Baker Hughes delivers a unique combination of leading technologies, expert project managers, technical specialists and global experience to help operators exploit the economic promise of deepwater projects. We are dedicated to unlocking the value of deepwater reservoirs by helping our customers operate safely and efficiently to maximize hydrocarbon recovery.

Global Experience at Delivering Critical Technologies

In more than a decade of global deepwater experience, Baker Hughes has gained in depth knowledge of the geology, operating challenges, technical risks and best practices of deepwater drilling and production. Our teams have delivered technology solutions in the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Brazil, West Africa, the North Sea, Asia Pacific and Australia. Baker Hughes has provided leading services for riserless drilling, drilling complex well trajectories through salt layers, managing pressure in extremely deep wells, evaluating complex formations, completing wells in high pressure/high temperature reservoirs, assuring flow in wells and flow lines, and providing boosters to increase production rates from subsea wells. Operators can benefit from our experience in this wide range of critical deepwater technologies.

“We are dedicated to unlocking the value of deepwater reservoirs by helping our customers maximize hydrocarbon recovery.”

Strengthened Reservoir Capabilities

With the recent formation of our Reservoir Technology and Consulting group, Baker Hughes has strengthened its capabilities in reservoir engineering and geomechanics. Reservoir engineering services provided by Gaffney, Cline & Associates help operators improve their understanding of their deepwater reservoirs and enable them to plan effective development programs. GeoMechanics International, a world leader in reservoir geomechanics, provides detailed analysis of the stress fields of the overburden and the reservoir rock to promote hole stability during drilling and optimize recovery over the life of the reservoir.

World-Class Research, Engineering and Manufacturing

Baker Hughes is a leader in the engineering, design and application of products and integrated systems to meet the specific requirements of deepwater projects.

Our extensive research and development resources include ten major technology centers, which develop new products and test them under extreme environmental conditions.
In addition, our engineers and scientists conduct basic research in metallurgy, electronics, geosciences, chemistry, elastomers and other materials to extend the application envelope of our downhole systems.

Our manufacturing capabilities enable us to build the highest quality tools and equipment. Major manufacturing facilities in the United States, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia produce a full range of drill bits, advanced drilling and LWD systems, and wireline logging instruments, and completion equipment designed for high pressure, high temperature environments. We manufacture and test our advanced wireline logging instruments. We also manufacture complete electric submersible pumping (ESP) systems, and produce electronic gauges and fiber optic cable for our reservoir monitoring services.

Global Infrastructure for Deepwater Operations

Baker Hughes has the global infrastructure to support deepwater drilling provinces throughout the world including major operations facilities along the Gulf of Mexico, in Brazil, West Africa, the North Sea, Malaysia, India and China. Our infrastructure includes repair and maintenance facilities, liquid mud plants, chemical and fluids laboratories, all staffed by highly-trained engineers and technicians.

Expert Support for Operational Excellence

Experienced Baker Hughes deepwater project engineers act as focal points to understand the customer’s technical and operational challenges. These project engineers coordinate with select teams of Baker Hughes experts from the right technical disciplines who recommend, design and apply technology solutions to meet each project’s unique requirements.

Baker Hughes has a 100-year tradition of operational excellence, which continues in support of our deepwater customers during every phase of each project. Our field engineers are qualified through rigorous certification programs and are supported by senior technical coordinators.

Remote operations centers support well-site activity. At our onshore BEACON centers, experienced engineers monitor drilling, formation evaluation and completions activity on deepwater rigs and provide advice, interpretation and troubleshooting to rig-site personnel. This real-time data communication enables improved performance while drilling complex wells, more precise well placement during reservoir navigation, and faster decisions during formation evaluation. Our customers also can access real-time and processed data via the Internet using our WellLinkSM data service.

Baker Hughes deepwater experts share their global experience using an extensive knowledge management system. Collaboration tools include our drill bit record data base, the OASIS Drilling Knowledge Management System, and our Advantage drilling experience data base.
