Quantec™ PDC Bit Achieves 15% ROP Improvement in Saudi Arabias Manifa Field
Hughes Christensen continues to perform well on the challenging ERD wells in Manifa, Saudi Arabia. A
Quantec 12-1/4 in. bit recently drilled the longest section with a rotary steerable system. The bit drilled 5,707 ft (1,739 m) at 32.5 ft/hr (9.9 m/hr) and built angle from 42° to 69° very successfully, although ROPs were controlled through the softer formations due to rig limitations. This outstanding performance translates into an improvement of 23% for footage drilled and 15% for ROP over the previous best. This feat was achieved by revisiting the previous bit designs used in Manifa, modifying the cutting structure, bit aggressiveness, and gauge configuration to match the requirements of the drilling system, and optimizing the operating parameters in the field. |

Answers While Drilling for Challenging Sub-salt Well in Brazils Santos Basin
INTEQ has successfully delivered drilling and evaluation services for a challenging horizontal well in the Santos Basin, Brazils strategically
important sub-salt area. In the process, a competitor was replaced after experiencing three successive MWD failures and was unable to build angle
at the critical point. INTEQ used real-time gamma and density images to navigate the reservoir.
TesTrak™ pressure measurements provided reservoir
gradients and facilitated mud optimization while drilling. Operator expectations were to drill this section with five bits, but INTEQ finished in
two runs using a Hughes Christensen bit. The real challenge was drilling an 8.5
in. section to TD at 6,133 m (20,121 ft). This section included a
build-up from 40° to 88° and navigating through the reservoir. The build-up section crossed a very hard shale formation where the competitors
rotary steerable service was unable to build angle. In addition, the build-up section was very challenging with ROPs averaging only about 2 m/h (6.5 ft/h)
and high vibrations levels. The reservoir section of 826 m (2,710 ft) was drilled in 120 circulating hours. |

TERRA-MAX Water-based Fluid Used Successfully for the First Time in the Middle East
Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids successfully used the
TERRA-MAX high-performance water-based fluid system to drill the 17.5
in. section of a well in Oman. Previous wells in this field had encountered swelling shales and tight hole while drilling through the Shargi formation. The TERRA-MAX system was used to displace the spud mud employed to drill the previous section while installing the BOPs. 3,593 ft. (1,095 m) were drilled through the Shargi, Natih, and Nahr Umr formations with no shale breakout or tight hole while running short trips. Casing was set at 6,801 ft. (2,073 m) with no problems. The well marked the first time TERRA-MAX fluid has been used in the Middle East. |

Successful Single-Run 440-ft Tubing Conveyed Perforating Run in Australia
Baker Atlas Australia has successfully completed one of the largest Tubing Conveyed Perforating (TCP) jobs ever performed in the MEAP region. The operation was performed using a tapered perforating string, with an overall length of 6,270 ft (1,911 m). The unique perforating solution was completed in a single run with 440 ft (134 m) of 4-1/2
in. 5 spf
Predator XP , 768 ft (234 m) of 4-1/2 in. spacer, 1,946 ft (593 m) of 3-3/8 in. 3 spf Predator XP and 3,117 ft (950 m) of 3-3/8 in. spacer. High-speed gauges confirmed an instantaneous underbalance of 2,500 psi. |

Frac-Point™ Installations in China Aid Stimulation of Gas Reservoirs
Baker Oil Tools China has successfully completed the first
installations of the
One Trip Frac-Point System
outside the United States. Two sequential Frac-Point installations in
the Sichuan province enabled the operator to stimulate gas
reservoirs. The first well was in the Sichuan Mo-xi field and utilized a
two-zone Frac-Point completion in a 754 m (2,474 ft) horizontal section
in which the zones were acid fractured. The second well was in the
Sichuan Guangan field and utilized a four-zone One Trip Frac-Point
System in a 576 m (1,890 ft) horizontal in which the zones were
fractured with an average of 25 tons of proppant per interval. |

Mitigation of Corrosion Due to High-Velocity Gas and Fluid Impingement in a Northern U.S. Gas Field
A northern U.S. gas field was experiencing excessive corrosion, particularly at locations where fluid impingement against the pipe wall was prevalent. Baker Petrolite partnered with the customer to plan and execute a representative field trial
using its newly developed CRW9220
Corrosion Inhibitor. This
chemical service treatment reduced the baseline corrosion rate by a factor of 10. The customers production field is located in proximity to a U.S. national park. This fact added to the already high level of importance the operator placed on asset integrity and release mitigation. Because
Baker Petrolites CRW9220 Corrosion Inhibitor is low-temperature capable, the customer now enjoys the benefits of easier-to-handle, high-shear corrosion protection on a year-round basis. |

ESP System for Storage Cavern Recovered After a Record 18-Year Run
A Centrilift
electrical submersible pumping (ESP) system was recovered recently after running for 18 years. The customer had used the ESP system to intermittently pump liquid propane from a storage cavern near Lawrence, Missouri. Like many mechanical systems, frequent starting and stopping of an ESP accelerates wear, but this system performed well until rocks in the fluid and sheer old age shut it down. Due to the longevity of the ESP, Centrilift engineering staff conducted a full forensic teardown and analysis following the recovery of the system. A veteran engineering technician, who supervised the disassembly inspection, noted that the longest ESP run life he had previously encountered was seven or eight years. Forensic engineers indicated this ESP model was one of the first graphalloy bearing pumps made by Centrilift. |
