GMI Launches 3D Geomechanics Services

GeoMechanics International (GMI) has launched a new service that provides 3D mechanical simulations of the stress field around salt structures. This new service avoids unrealistic assumptions that are generally used for wellbore stability analyses, such as the vertical stress being a principal stress, and thus is capable of providing a far more reliable prediction of safe mud weights than a standard analysis.
Recent application of this service in exploration wells in the Gulf of Mexico showed that the prediction of the frac
gradient was significantly improved and the salt exit
location could be optimized from a stability aspect.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Baker Hughes, GMI is a leader in
consulting, training and software in the field of geomechanics
and its application to oil and gas reservoirs.

Baker Hughes Acquires Reservoir Consulting Firms
Baker Hughes has acquired two reservoir
consulting firms --
Gaffney, Cline & Associates (GCA) and
GeoMechanics International (GMI) -- strengthening the
company's capabilities in reservoir engineering, technical and managerial
advisory services and reservoir geomechanics. "These two acquisitions are part of an
ongoing effort to broaden our capabilities by expanding Baker Hughes'
traditional strength in wellbore-related
technology to encompass comprehensive reservoir and midstream
solutions," said Chad C. Deaton, Baker Hughes Chairman, President
and CEO. "The two firms will continue to operate as stand-alone
consultancies while providing advice and services to enhance the
reservoir-related offerings of Baker Hughes product line divisions.”

Baker Atlas Wins Two Technology Awards from ICoTA for GasView™ Service
Baker Atlas has won technology awards from both the U.S. and European chapters of the Intervention & Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA). The
GasView™ through-casing formation gas saturation measurement service produces an exceptionally clear picture of the reservoir gas saturation using high-resolution measurements. Applications of the GasView service include reservoir monitoring in gas and three-phase reservoirs, gas injection monitoring in enhanced recovery and gas storage applications, and analysis of new well gas content when openhole logs are not available. |

Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids Uses MICRO-PRIME™ Spacer System to Displace Diesel Mud System and Clean Tubulars and Wellbore
Recently in the Gulf of Mexico, Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids displaced
a heavyweight diesel oil-based mud system using the
MICRO-PRIME™
High Efficiency Wellbore Cleaning Spacer
system. Issues of concern were extended reach deviation, slim hole liner and tubulars,
high differential displacement pressures, and elevated Bottom Hole
Temperature (BHT). The well displacement was successfully modeled using BHDF's DISPLEX™ engineering software in which
actual displacement pressures were less than 150 psi
from projected. Due to
effective planning, no time was lost on preparing displacement pills or
during the pumping procedure. Following the application of MICRO-PRIME, the
spacer system did an excellent job of cleaning the tubulars
and wellbore. |

Hughes Christensen Quantec™ Premium PDC Bits Achieve 35% Reduction in Pinedale Anticline Drilling
Hughes Christensen has had great success in Sublette County in western Wyoming using the newly launched
Quantec™ PDC
bits . In one such example, 6” Quantec bit designs were run in the
Pinedale aAnticline slimhole interval at the bottom of S-curve wells
stretching to 14,500 ft (4,420 m). Interbedded sandstones and shales
require very high mud weights with high overburden pressures,
leading to high confining pressures. This is typically a very costly
hole section characterized by slow penetration rates. The Quantec
bits enabled the operator to drill the slimhole interval 72 hours
faster than the average of the offsets. This is a 35% reduction in
the time spent in the interval and translates to $114,000 in savings
in rig time on a single well. In an environment where the operator
drills one well per month, this performance could result in almost
$1.4 million in savings per rig over the course of a year. |

Baker Oil Tools Uses WindowMaster™ System to Deploy Deepwater Hydraulic Whipstock in the Gulf of Mexico
Baker Oil Tools crew ran and deployed its first hydraulic whipstock in deepwater with a sidetrack well on the Matterhorn platform. Following a competitor’s gravel pack failure, the operator wanted to re-enter the production zone from the same casing. Water depth was 2,800 ft (853 m), and the deviation in the 9-5/8” casing at the whipstock setting depth was 61°. The operator also wanted a hydraulic set one-trip system that did not require a cast iron bridge plug. BOT deployed a
G2™ Hydraulic WindowMaster™ system and completed the window in 5.5 hrs and then drilled 40 ft of additional formation with flawless execution.

Centrilift Starts-up First Subsea ESP System in Siri Field, Offshore Brazil
Centrilift has completed the
installation and successful start-up of the first
electrical submersible
pumping (ESP) system in a subsea well producing
heavy oil. The well in the Siri Field offshore Brazil
is a two-year test, which will be followed by an 18-well full field
development in 2012. The ESP system includes a 1,000 HP motor and a new
pump stage designed to produce 12,500 barrels of fluid (up to 800 Cp) per
day. The subsea well is tied back nearly 5,000
ft (1.5 km) to an FPSO. |

Baker Petrolite Receives Approval for NOxitrol™ 1000 Additive for Low-Emission Diesel Fuel
Baker Petrolite
recently received final approval from the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for the NOxitrol™
1000 Additive as an alternative technology to meet the demands of Texas
Low Emission Diesel (TxLED). The approval comes
after two years of R&D, culminating in a very rigorous engine test
protocol. The testing demonstrated to TCEQ and EPA the effectiveness of
the additive in mitigating smog-producing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter emissions from diesel
vehicles. |

INTEQ Runs First MagTrak™ Service in Nigeria. Results Compare Very Well with LithoTrak™ Data
INTEQ recently ran the first
MagTrak™ job in the Utue
field in Nigeria.
The 8½” deviated hole section was drilled using
6¾” AutoTrak™ RCLS, LithoTrak™ and MagTrak™
services. Cutting primarily through shale with intermittent sand, this
run drilled 1,727 ft (526.4 m) from 9,206 ft (2805.9 m) to 10,933 ft
(3332.3 m) measured depth. The client’s primary reason for running
this LWD package was to compare the porosity readings of the new MagTrak service with the proven
LithoTrak
measurements and, if acceptable, qualify the MagTrak
tool for future applications. Though real-time communication with the MagTrak system was lost, the tool obtained a complete
set of memory data, which compared very well with LithoTrak
porosity readings. |
