SubSep Downhole Oil-Water Separator Generates Over $16 Million of Incremental Revenue

Don’t just count what is produced – produce what counts!

Faced with constraints on their surface water handling facilities and the prospect of a ban on overboard dumping in Bohai Bay, the operator was looking for novel solutions to address these issues. Based on the availability of a suitable injection zone with good reservoir data, the concept of using a downhole separator and directly injecting the water was proposed. The main challenge was to ensure suffi cient separation effi ciency to limit the oil carry-over in the injection stream to allow sustained injection into the selected zone.

The operator had already installed dualcan ESP systems in a number of their wells in Bohai Bay, making it relatively easy to include a SubSep™ downhole separator into the system and to confi gure the completion design to discharge the separated water into the disposal zone. A control line was included in the completion to allow the water stream to be sampled to verify the actual parts per million (ppm) count for the oil carry-over, with the system achieving a level down to 520 ppm.
