The Hughes Christensen Talon™ 3D high-efficiency vector-accurate PDC bit shortens your days on well with superior directional control and higher ROP in unconventional plays. This version is a one-piece steel-body design—with significantly increased junk slot volume for improved hydraulic efficiency—and is optimized for curve/lateral drilling.

We engineered a shorter bit-to-bend dimension to improve steerability and build rate aggressiveness. When paired with a conventional drilling system, you can get through the curve and lateral and into the pay zone faster, as we’re doing in the Haynesville shale play in the southern US.

To improve run life, our Talon 3D PDC has proprietary hardfacing and application-specific, patented polished cutters. The hardfacing increases PDC drill bit durability. The polished cutters improve drilling efficiency by reducing balling. Polishing eliminates buildup on the cutter face, enhancing the cutting action and cuttings transport.

Operator saves more than two days and $101,000
In the Haynesville shale, an operator chose a Talon 3D PDC drill bit with superior directional control and stick/slip control technology to save time and money in the curve and lateral. The improved toolface control, consistent buildup rate, and reduced motor stalling, for example, made the difference in this great run.

We drilled a total of 5,669 ft [1,728 m] at 35 ft/hr [11 m/hr] compared with the average 2,018 ft [615 m] at 25 ft/hr [8 m/hr]. Distance drilled increased 181% with a 40% increase in ROP. The operator saved 67 hr and $101,000.
