Preventing malaria

Malaria is one of the main HSE issues in Africa because many countries are affected. Protection begins before arriving in country with our Web-based malaria safety training. We strongly advise our employees to obtain antimalaria medication before visiting a high-risk area.

Because malaria can be severe in a nonimmune person, all visitors from a nonmalarious area to a malarious area should be protected. Despite decades of research, there’s not a malaria vaccine. There are fairly reliable antimalarial medications—such as chemoprophylaxis—that do help to prevent malaria.

We supply a malaria protection kit to any employee traveling to a high-risk area, plus a curative kit that is issued to nonimmune personnel in country after a full briefing. The kit has rapid diagnosis tests and treatment.

We meet regularly with employees living in high-risk areas to give them the latest malaria facts, including protection information and advice.

Ensuring driving safety

Driving can be a major safety issue. The World Health Organization estimates 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year with as many as 50 million injured. Projections indicate these figures will increase by about 65% over the next 20 years unless there’s an increased prevention commitment.

Reducing the number and severity of these incidents requires an interdependent HSE culture. Our Africa region has implemented a comprehensive Road Journey Safety Improvement Plan to reduce the number of vehicle incidents by 50% or more. We require each of our employees to create a journey management plan, which assesses road hazards and monitors all trips.
