Outstanding HSE performance

Chevron North America Exploration and Production in Covington, Louisiana, honored our region with its PRAISE President’s Recognition for Accomplishments in Safety and Environment 2010. The award recognizes Baker Hughes’ Gulf of Mexico employees for working three years and 1,255,000 hours without an OSHA recordable injury and BJ Services’ employees for working three years and over 500,000 hours without an OSHA recordable injury.

The operator presents this prestigious award to a group or individual that demonstrates either proactive efforts in reducing or eliminating safety and environmental incidents or shows exceptional HSE performance.

The recipient company must not have experienced an industrial fatality involving an employee or contractor during the year of recognition and must have achieved all Chevron environmental or safety performance objectives.

Building reefs in the gulf

The Hughes Christensen surface rig tests drill bit performance using very large blocks of rock to show bit wear patterns. The blocks are drilled through so they look like Swiss cheese. After testing, the large blocks of rock end up in the gulf. Barges transport them offshore where they’re dropped into the ocean to enable the seeding of new coral reefs. This boosts the reef rebuilding effort by the State of Texas.

Additionally, we give small rock cuttings from the drilling lab to the Texas Department of Transportation, which mixes the rock with roadbed materials for building or repairing stretches of highway. This boosts the Texas Roads Program.

These two sustainable environmental programs offer economic and social benefits, including employment for individuals in the reef rebuilding and roads programs; reduced disposal cost; and new habitats for marine organisms.
