Overview

Challenges
  • Some of the system’s critical dimensions did not adhere to the ANSI recommendations
Results
  • CFD study and physical model testing confirmed problems and identified solutions
  • Some of these modifications were successfully implemented during testing, resulting in full ANSI compliance

Case study details

A new power plant has a cooling water system with two cooling tower basins supplying water through two intake channels, each comprised of a single-course trash screen and penstock arrangement. Water discharge from both channels gravitates to a common cooling water pump basin that should house seven main circulation pumps and two smaller emergency pumps.

Our team was asked to optimize the layout for guaranteed pump operation and reliability.
