Modernizing Asset Performance at Scale: Acelen’s Digital Journey with Cordant™

Executive Summary

Acelen is a leading Brazilian refinery company, established in 2021 following Mubadala Capital’s acquisition of Petrobras’ Landulpho Alves Refinery, now known as the Mataripe Refinery. Headquartered in Bahia, Acelen operates one of Brazil’s most strategic refining assets and plays a key role in the country’s energy transition. With a processing capacity of approximately 300,000 barrels per day, Acelen represents 14% of Brazil’s refining capacity and supplies over 42% of the fuel needs in the Northeast region.

To strengthen its integrity strategy for static equipment, Acelen selected Cordant™ Asset Strategy as part of a major business process transformation. Building on this successful partnership, Acelen recently expanded its digital coverage by adopting Cordant™ Asset Health to monitor and improve the health of dynamic equipment.

Challenge

Acelen operates one of Brazil’s largest refining plants, with extensive infrastructure and thousands of critical static and dynamic assets; including boilers, pipes, pumps, compressors, and turbines. The company faced several key challenges:

  • Modernize and improve its strategy management processes.
  • Optimize inspection time and quality for static equipment.
  • Enhance asset health to minimize unplanned shutdowns that disrupt production and drive up maintenance costs.

Traditional approaches lacked the predictive capabilities needed to address these challenges proactively.

Solution

Baker Hughes deployed Cordant™ Asset Strategy and is currently implementing Cordant™ Asset Health across Acelen’s site in Brazil. These solutions combine traditional methodologies with AI-driven insights to improve asset health and maintenance processes for both static and dynamic equipment, helping Acelen achieve its operational and sustainability goals.

Results

  • Over 7,000 assets covered through strategic planning.
  • More than 7,000 inspection reports generated in the past three years.
  • Improved strategy plans and asset reliability.
  • Enhanced maintenance planning, reducing operational risk and supporting sustainability objectives.

Next Steps

Baker Hughes will continue to support Acelen in the coming years by advancing asset health and strategy management. Plans include implementing Cordant™ Asset Health + Machine Health in 2026 and integrating Cordant™ solutions with SAP for seamless operations.
