Gordon Welsh

Head of Business Group, UK Export Finance

Gordon had an extensive career in banking in the UK and the USA before joining UK Export Finance. Gordon also spent three years with Airbus in its customer sales financing team before taking a year’s secondment to work with the UK’s Secretary of State for Trade & Investment to set up an export promotion scheme. Leaving banking for public service, Gordon has undertaken a number of roles at UKEF, initially leading on product and business development, before running the department’s business underwriting teams.

Gordon is now UKEF’s Head of Business Group and is the alternate chair for UKEF’s Credit Committee. Most recently, he has been responsible for all aviation business and for leading UKEF’s initiative in the field of supplier finance.

In 2015, Gordon led UKEF through its first Shariah compliant sukuk bond – a first for any export credit agency – which was not only three times oversubscribed, but also created history as it represented the largest ever ECA guaranteed debt capital markets offering in the aviation sector. It was also the first time a sukuk had been issued to raise finance for aircraft prior to their delivery.
