Eddy Current Testing (ECT) FAQ
What is Eddy Current Testing?

Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is a form of non-destructive testing (NDT) that employs electromagnetic induction to detect and define flaws in conductive materials. ECT is a great solution for checking surface and subsurface (i.e. underneath a coat of paint) conditions.

ECT transducers, at their core, are comprised of a coil of wire (i.e. an induction coil) and an alternating current which together form a magnetic field. When this coil is introduced to conductive materials, any opposing currents will be induced into the material and will be visible as eddy currents

Any defect in the target material will manifest itself as a disruption in the eddy currents, which can then be measured by way of their changing impedance.

It is this sort of non-visual confirmation of surface and subsurface defects that makes ECT perfect for weld inspection, fastener hole inspection, tube inspection, heat treatment verification, and even metal grade sorting.

How does Eddy Current Testing work?

ECT is based upon the concept of electromagnetic induction. When an alternating current (AC) is passed through a conductor an alternating magnetic field develops around the coil.

This field expands and contracts with fluctuations in the alternating current. When the coil is in proximity to another electrical conductor, like your target material, for example, the aforementioned fluctuating magnetic field surrounding the coil will then permeate the target material and create an eddy current. The resultant eddy current creates its own magnetic field.

Any changes in the conductivity of your target material, such as near-surface defects or thickness inconsistencies, will affect the eddy current. This disruption is then detected using a detector coil.

It is these disruptions in the eddy current that can be measured, and thus provide data on your target material's condition.

What are the applications of Eddy Current Testing (ECT)?

Eddy current testing (ECT) is suitable to a wide variety of industries and applications. If you need to obtain highly accurate measurements on a conductive material while improving your production times, EDT is one of the best choices to date. Here are just some of the top industries and applications we see in use today:

    • Aerospace Industry
    • Petrochemical Industry
    • Material sorting - to determine that the proper materials are being used for a job
    • Used to determine material characteristics/purity of the material
    • Tube and wire testing
    • Weld testing
    • Heat treatment verification
    • Bolt hole inspection
    • CNC machining post-process inspections
    • Metal fastener inspection
    • Accurate coating thickness measurement

What are the advantages of Eddy Current Testing?

Eddy Current Testing is at the forefront of non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies and offers some of the most exciting benefits and use cases for those who need high accuracy while maintaining - or even improving - their productivity. If you need to get accurate measurements on any conductive material, you'll be hard-pressed to find a technology better than ECT.

Here is a list of just some of the benefits and advantages of using eddy current testing (ECT) over other forms of non-destructive testing (NDT):

    • Faster scanning speed than ultrasonic testing
    • Minimal preparation for surfaces to be tested
    • Testing process can be automated
    • ECT can test through several millimeters of coating and several layers without interference
    • Very sensitive - can detect very small cracks
    • Testing devices are portable with immediate results/feedback
    • The test equipment does not need to be in direct contact with the item being tested
    • Production is not interrupted due to fast and automated testing
    • Groups of sensors can be used to provide a larger scan area
