HOUSTON, TEXAS – Oct. 31, 2011 – Baker Hughes offers three multistage stimulation technologies that provide operators with time- and cost-efficient completion solutions to significantly increase production, improve recovery and preserve water during the pressure pumping process.

Baker Hughes’ FracPoint multistage completion system uses openhole packers to isolate multiple stages and ball-activated sleeves to divert the frac treatment. The system’s EX-C sleeves extend the capability of ball-activated systems, enabling more contact with the reservoir while maintaining fracturing efficiency. The sleeves contain a patented ball seat that collapses underneath the ball to provide additional surface area between the ball and ball seat, providing enough additional support to achieve fracturing pressures.

A significant addition to the FracPoint system is the IN-Tallic disintegrating frac balls. These revolutionary frac balls are made of a new nanomaterial developed by Baker Hughes’ nanotechnology scientists. The material has the compressive strength of steel, but is lighter than aluminum. The balls were developed to disintegrate in most common wellbore and fracturing fluids, so no special fluid mixture is required, enabling operators to remove the frac balls from the well without having to mill them out.

Baker Hughes’ OptiPort multistage fracturing system includes pressure-balanced sleeves to divert the fracture, and either cement or openhole packers to isolate each stage. The sleeves are opened by placing a coiled tubing packer between the two ports on the sleeve and applying pressure to create an offset. The coiled tubing assembly also allows real-time downhole pressure monitoring during fracturing, which provides the information needed to help prevent screen-outs. If a screen-out does occur, the OptiPort system greatly reduces nonproductive time, because the coiled tubing assembly is already equipped for clean-out.
