Improve drilling performance with in-bit measurements

The Baker Hughes MultiSense™ dynamics mapping system offers a noninvasive method for detecting downhole dynamics events. This system also benchmarks performance to optimize overall drilling efficiency, reduce nonproductive time (NPT), and improve drilling practices, drilling parameters, and bit selection over the course of a drilling campaign.

Reduce dynamics and drilling dysfunction-related NPT

Using proprietary, field-proven Baker Hughes algorithms and a robust sensor module that is inserted into a recess in the pin of a bit or other modified API connections, the pressure-activated, memory-based module captures and records up to 200 hours of dynamics event measurements. These include torsional, axial, and lateral vibrations and revolutions per minute (RPM).

Additionally, downhole weight on bit (WOB) and torque on bit (TOB) data are available. Together, this information facilitates a comparison of downhole mechanical specific energy (MSE) with surface MSE to provide corrective recommendations that further maximize performance.

The bit-related measurements secured by the MultiSense system can complement existing measurement while drilling (MWD), vibration stick/slip, and advanced CoPilot™ systems. As such, the MultiSense system yields important insights into the effects of downhole dynamics. This analysis culminates in a better understanding of the entire drilling system, driving both short- and long-term improvements.

The in-bit sensing module and sensor design reduces the need for additional connections and optimizes sensor-to-bit spacing to match optimal directional control with critical data collection.

The module, with through-hole for unrestricted mud flow, is available in several sizes to accommodate 4½-, 6⅝-, and 7⅝-in. API regular, API internal flush, and Baker Hughes modular pin connections. The MultiSense system modules with WOB and TOB in-bit measurements are available for 4½-in. shank sizes.

Enhance drilling efficiency and performance

After each run, MultiSense system data is combined with surface and existing BHA measurements to facilitate post-well analysis of downhole performance limiters, MSE, and associated power to the bit. Based on this information, Baker Hughes experts can provide remedial recommendations to help minimize NPT and continuously improve drilling performance. Overall, these continuous improvements result in higher productivity and lower well construction costs for multiple well applications.
