The Baker Hughes Surface Logging Services (SLS) include fit-for-purpose gas extraction, measurement, and monitoring technologies that enable SLS to provide tiered services for safety monitoring, reservoir identification, and reservoir characterization.
Safety Monitoring for Well Control
Our Xtract™ gas measurement and monitoring services are crucial to maintaining a safe working environment at the wellsite. Total gas and C1-C5+ hydrocarbon isomers are extracted from the drilling mud and measured continuously with our industry-leading dual flame ionization detector chromatographs. Additional electronic sensors, displays and alarms can be placed at critical locations around the rigsite to warn the crew of abnormally high and potentially dangerous hydrocarbon gas levels.
In addition to hydrocarbon gases, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are also monitored with inline and external sensors, and appropriate warnings are given to maintain the rig crew’s safety.
The measurement of total gas also provides an important dataset for the determination of abnormal formation pressure. In combination with cuttings geology and the drilling parameter trends, the trends displayed by the background gas, connection gas, and other pumps-off gases enable SLS personnel to accurately predict and mitigate pore pressure incidents, greatly reducing operational risk.
At the basic level of formation evaluation, hydrocarbon gases and their isomers are used for reservoir identification–simply, does a reservoir exist? Increased total gas and corresponding increases of heavier hydrocarbons are one of the first signs at the wellsite that a reservoir has been penetrated by the bit. Cuttings evaluation, from our Geologic Services portfolio, identifies samples for traces of any oil show as a corroborative reservoir indicator. Traditionally, this initial evaluation at the surface was invaluable for later investigation with downhole technologies.
Reservoir Characterization with Advanced Gas Analysis
Our HC-Vision™ reservoir characterization service leverages Xtract hydrocarbon gas measurements, along with proprietary analytical software and remote subject matter experts, to produce a near real-time well log for reservoir evaluation and interpretation. This visual log enhances traditional gas ratio plots by enabling wellsite geologists to instantly interpret important fundamental properties of the reservoir, such as fluid type, productive vs. nonproductive zones, fluid contacts (gas/oil/water), and reservoir connectivity.
