Mobile Compression unit: Overview
Baker Hughes, with its uniquely combined experience of designing and building reciprocating compressors and operating pipelines evacuation services, has designed transportable solutions to limit/avoid gas release and flaring during pipeline depressurization.
These solutions — spanning equipment sales, turnkey service packages, and full fleet‑management models — are designed to significantly reduce methane emissions ahead of pipeline maintenance or modification activities.
The equipment portfolio has been engineered for agility and modularity, enabling faster mobilization, streamlined operations, and reduced environmental impact. User‑friendly by design, the units allow quick rig‑up and rig‑down and are built on proven, industry‑trusted technologies, including gas engines and Baker Hughes vertical reciprocating compressors.
Cut Emissions: Over the past four years, Baker Hughes has helped operators eliminate routine venting by recompressing an average of 18 million Nm³ of gas per year across Europe—equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 20,000 households. In typical operations, more than 95% of the gas contained in the pipeline is preserved, avoiding methane emissions while ensuring operational continuity.
Capture value: By preventing venting, the recovered gas remains in the network for end‑consumer use and supports compliance with European regulations governing methane emissions. The retained gas delivers a value exceeding €10 million annually based on average market purchase prices.
Enable transparent data: Through the Baker Hughes FastLCA digital platform, operators gain access to transparent, auditable data associated with each mobile recompression deployment. This provides a clear carbon‑footprint accounting for every operation, supporting both regulatory reporting and ESG commitments.
