Weld Inspection Probes
We offer a range of weld inspection probes, including small footprint weld probes and integral wedge probes. The small contact area on our small footprint probes fits on standard single element MSWS wedges—comparable to standard single element MSWS probes with phased array capabilities.
And our integral wedge probes are durable and ergonomically designed with a die-cast housing, similar to conventional probes—allowing for easy transfer from conventional to phased array inspection with existing mechanics and probe holders that can be reused.
Bolt Inspection Probes
Our bolt inspection probes are a best choice to yield high-quality results and strong PoD for the detection of defective areas in threaded bolts. This is crucial to reducing construction failures and potential liabilities. The protective membrane enables steady coupling on rough surfaces, and they come available with multiple connector types.

In non-destructive testing (NDT), a phased array ultrasound probe is used primarily for detecting, sizing, and characterizing internal flaws in industrial materials without causing damage.
Unlike conventional single-element ultrasonic probes, phased array probes contain multiple small elements that can be electronically pulsed at different time delays, allowing the ultrasonic beam to be steered, focused, and swept through a material without physically moving the probe.
This enables inspectors to perform sectorial scans, linear scans, and depth focusing, making it especially effective for weld inspection, corrosion mapping, crack detection, and thickness measurement in pipelines, pressure vessels, structural steel, and aerospace components
In non-destructive testing, a phased array ultrasonic probe contains multiple small piezoelectric elements that are pulsed with carefully controlled time delays. By changing these delays (focal laws), the ultrasonic beam can be electronically steered and focused at different angles and depths inside the material without moving the probe.
This allows inspectors to sweep through a range of angles during weld inspections or component testing.
Reflected sound waves from defects return to the probe, and the system calculates their location based on time-of-flight and beam angle, displaying the results as sector or cross-sectional scans. This electronic beam control improves inspection speed, coverage, and defect detection compared to conventional ultrasonic testing.
Phased array probes are primarily used in non-destructive testing for weld inspection, where they detect and size defects such as cracks, lack of fusion, and porosity in pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural steel.
Their ability to electronically scan multiple angles makes them highly effective for complex weld geometries.
They are also used for corrosion mapping and thickness measurement, enabling fast scanning of large areas to identify material loss. In aerospace and power generation industries, phased array probes inspect composites, castings, forgings, and critical components where accurate flaw detection and sizing are essential.
Phased array probes offer several advantages over conventional ultrasonic testing. One of the main benefits is electronic beam steering, which allows multiple inspection angles to be generated from a single probe position without physically moving it.
This increases inspection speed and coverage, especially in weld testing.
They also provide electronic focusing at different depths, improving sensitivity and defect detection capability.
The ability to generate real-time cross-sectional images (such as S-scans) enhances defect characterization and sizing accuracy. Additionally, phased array systems allow better data recording and documentation, improving traceability and inspection reliability. Overall, they provide greater flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy in flaw detection compared to single-element probes.
Phased array probes are widely used in industries where internal defect detection and weld integrity are critical. Common industries include:
-Oil and gas – pipelines, pressure vessels, offshore structures
-Power generation – turbines, boilers, and critical welds
-Aerospace – aircraft structures and composite materials
-Manufacturing and fabrication – welds, castings, and forgings
-Transportation (rail and shipbuilding) – track, wheel and axle inspection and structural components
These industries rely on phased array testing for accurate flaw detection, sizing, and documentation.
No, Waygate probes are not automatically compatible with all phased array instruments. Compatibility depends on several technical factors including connector type, number of elements, frequency range, impedance, and the instrument’s channel capacity. Phased array systems must be able to support the probe’s element count and configuration, and the connector (such as multi-pin IPEX or LEMO types) must physically match the instrument.
Waygate Technologies designs its probes primarily for use with its own phased array instruments, but many probes can be used with other manufacturers’ units if the electrical specifications and connectors are compatible. In some cases, adapters or configuration files are required. Before connecting a probe to a different system, it is important to verify compatibility through the instrument manual or the manufacturer’s specifications to avoid performance issues or potential equipment damage.
Waygate Technologies offers a wide range of ultrasonic and phased array probes designed for diverse inspection environments. There is no single universal temperature limit, as it depends on the specific probe design and intended application.
Standard phased array probes are typically rated between +60 °C and +200 °C, with many general-purpose models operating around +60 °C to +80 °C. On the cold side, the lower limit is less than 0°C. For more demanding conditions, Waygate also provides specialized high-temperature probes capable of operating up to around +400 °F (≈204 °C).
