Baker Hughes’ Druck to Offer Lifesaving CPR Training for Employees

3 min read

Druck, a Baker Hughes business and industry leader in pressure measurement technology and instrumentation, announced Monday a collaboration with the charity, Heartwize.

The Groby- based global technology company collaborates with Heartwize charity to roll out training for employees on resuscitation and use of defibrillators to help save lives

Supported by Heartwize, a charity set up to help increase the provision of basic but vital heart resuscitation skills, Druck will roll out training, available for its 600 staff in the UK, enabling them to perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use a defibrillator if they witness a cardiac arrest. In addition, some Druck volunteers will receive enhanced training from Heartwize, enabling them to deliver resuscitation skills training to local secondary school students.

“Collaborating with Heartwize, a wonderful charity that has done incredible work to increase awareness of the need for resuscitation skills training, will help save lives and support our local community,” Gordon Docherty, Vice President of Druck.

Druck launched its employee training program this month and has already trained around 10% of its team. Its introduction has been widely welcomed by staff.

“Collaborating with Heartwize, a wonderful charity that has done incredible work to increase awareness of the need for resuscitation skills training, will help save lives and support our local community,” said Gordon Docherty, vice president of Druck.  “We know of at least three Druck colleagues that have saved a life by applying CPR.  Offering 600 Druck team members the ability to perform CPR and use a defibrillator not only reduces the risk of fatalities through cardiac arrest on site, but it means our colleagues can apply their lifesaving skills to family members, friends or members of the public.”

According to the British Heart Foundation, there are around 30,000 witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year in the UK. Dr Doug Skehan a Cardiologist from Glenfield and Heartwize co-director said: “Only a minority receive good quality immediate resuscitation from bystanders. This reflects a lack of meaningful preparation to help in such an extreme emergency; fear of doing the wrong thing or causing harm; a lack of familiarity with the use of a defibrillator (if one is available); and hope that professional help will arrive in time.  The result is dismal - just 10% of people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

“Increased provision of public access defibrillators complemented by embedded adult and school CPR training would boost survival rates significantly - across the UK thousands of lives could be saved.

“Heartwize trains volunteers to cascade resuscitation skills to the younger generation in schools.  Working with companies like Baker Hughes’ Druck provides a huge opportunity for systematic high quality resuscitation skills training to improve the survival chances for victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.   We’re also excited by the prospect of guiding Druck First Aiders to deliver school training – a real win-win. Developing this and similar partnerships with other local businesses will help to create the next generation of lifesavers.”

Adam Goodger, faculty leader for Lifeskills, at Brookvale Groby Learning Campus, one of the schools set to welcome Heartwize trained Druck volunteers, said: “The introduction of CPR and defibrillator training is a welcome addition to our lifeskills curriculum.  We support Heartwize’s aim to create a generation of lifesavers and our students are already looking forward to the interactive training with Baker Hughes’ Druck team.”
