The 3500/72M Rod Position Monitor provides waveform data to System 1 via a 3500 Transient Data Interface Module (TDI). 

Recently a customer shared with us a sudden change of the 1X vibration response of a steam turbine at steady state operating condition is assumed to be the result of damage, such as a liberated blade. Orbit 60 Series Update: System Fundamentals - Output Cards

Welcome back for the 4th quarter update of Orbit 60, Bently Nevada’s latest condition monitoring, protection and data integration platform. In last quarter’s update, we discussed how we reduced the number of Input card choices for Orbit 60 from over 80 different card types down to just 10. This was accomplished while simultaneously adding the capability of accepting positively biased sensor inputs such as traditional IEPE accelerometers and eliminating the need for dedicated Keyphasor input cards*. We expect that these improvements will make ordering and configuration of the system significantly easier for our customers. They should also reduce the required spares by half as well, written by John Kingham.

Most people know of Bently Nevada for the online monitoring and protection of the world’s most critical rotating assets. Fewer know that Bently, together with their 2011 acquisition of Commtest Instruments, have a combined experience exceeding 30 years in portable vibration data collectors and analyzers. And some aren’t aware that Bently’s flagship condition monitoring software, System 1, supports not only our critical machinery protection systems, but the full portfolio, including portables. Over those years we’ve received a lot of feedback from portable users, about how they’d really like their devices & software to behave. Here’s a distillation of those requests, along with how we’ve been addressing them, written by Nigel Leigh.

New Piston Rod Condition Monitoring Functionality for Bently Nevada 3500/72M Rod Position Monitor

The 3500/72M Recip Rod Position Monitor is a four-channel device that accepts input from Proximity probes. The sensor(s) measure the position of the reciprocating piston rod relative to the pressure packing case on a revolution to revolution basis. The monitor uses the signals to drive alarms and protect assets. The 3500/72M Rod Position Monitor provides waveform data to System 1 via a 3500 Transient Data Interface Module (TDI), written by Stephen Plaisance.

Diagnostics of Steam Turbine High Vibration from Coupling Failure

A sudden change of the 1X vibration response of a steam turbine at steady state operating condition is assumed to be the result of damage, such as a liberated blade. Unexpected 1X vibration response changing was monitored from a steam turbine driven boiler feedwater pump. It was not a lost blade or debris. The root cause was identified at the disc pack coupling which connects the turbine and pump. Through the Rotor Kit (RK-4) simulation, we could understand the relationship between coupling trouble and vibration response changes, written by Mr Ryu, Joo Yong.
