TORONTO— October 1, 2018— Baker Hughes, a GE company (NYSE: BHGE), today announced it has been awarded the first part of a contract for six turbine control upgrades at Bruce Power, the largest operating nuclear power facility in the world.* The contract includes industry-leading Mark VIe turbine controls as well as BHGE’s Bently Nevada condition monitoring technologySecurity ST cybersecurity protection suite and turbine simulator software. Today’s announcement marks the largest controls contract awarded since BHGE was formed in 2017.

With more than 47 terawatt hours of electricity produced annually, Bruce Power’s immense size, complexity and importance to the Ontario region require control systems that lead the industry in availability, reliability, and predictability. As of today, Bruce Power’s control systems are being upgraded to full digital analytic capability to enable greater efficiency of the plant for the next several decades of operation. Over time, new control upgrade packages will help to extend the life of Bruce Power by an estimated 40 years.

BHGE’s extensive expertise in the nuclear industry, OEM-agnostic retrofit experience, mechanical hydraulic knowledge and commitment to work with Bruce Power’s community development plan played important roles in BHGE successfully securing the contract.  The triple modular redundant design of BHGE’s turbine control and overspeed trip system will permit Bruce Power to enhance operability and reliability targets. By harnessing data from the Mark Vie controls and Bently Nevada 3500 condition monitoring systems, Bruce Power will be able to leverage predictive analytics via System 1 software and help drive greater efficiencies for the plant’s operations.

“We are very pleased to work with Bruce Power on this important project, and our latest technologies will make Bruce Power a smarter operation for the future,” said Terry Knight, CEO of BHGE’s Control Solutions and Bently Nevada businesses. “Our longstanding OEM experience, combined with our ability to marry hardware and software successfully, will help to keep Bruce Power running for decades and drive new levels of efficiency. We’re truly excited to help make it happen.”

“We are looking forward to growing our relationship with BHGE as we work together to successfully complete our Life Extension projects,” said Mike Rencheck, President and CEO, Bruce Power.  “By extending the life of the site to 2064, Bruce Power will create and sustain 22,000 jobs annually, across the province, while also delivering 30 per cent of Ontario’s electricity at 30 per cent less than the average cost to generate residential power.”
